Sit stand desks can boost your employees' health

It's a well-known fact that sitting for 8 plus hours a day is not good for anyone. The most well-known risk is back problems but an American study also showed that you're more at risk of diabetes, some cancers, and other long-term health conditions, as well as an increase in the risk of premature death. A study called the Take A Stand project also showed that back and neck problems were reduced by 54% within 4 weeks when using a standing desk periodically. This isn't only good news for your employees, but also for your sick leave statistics, as one employer who offered staff the option of sit and stand desks saw sickness absence reduce by 5%.

Using a sit stand desk can improve productivity

A study has shown that productivity improved by 7% when people are standing. This makes sense when you think about it; energy levels are increased, staff have reported feelings of improved mood and as we've already seen, health issues are reduced when using them.

How should you introduce sit stand desks into your workplace?

  • First, make them an option, rather than compulsory. There will always be a few early adopters who will jump at the chance of trying something new, and that will help other, more reluctant staff make the change.
  • Introduce standing gradually. Our bodies are not used to standing at work, so taking desks away, or making staff stand for fixed periods of time won't work. Instead, allow them to regulate their sitting and standing throughout the day and advise they do this gradually to build up their standing time.
  • Ensure you're still getting employees to check the height of laptops, positions of mouse and keyboards to ensure they don't strain their necks or arms.
